Skype and Bluetooth – Using Skype with a Bluetooth Headset
Posted by Arnold | Under Skype Saturday Feb 12, 2011Skype has given everyone the chance to communicate via the Internet for free with their loved ones anywhere in the world. The only problem is it tethers the user to the computer with a headset connected to the computer or if the speakers and microphone in use are built-in. With the installation of a Bluetooth headset you can continue the calls even if walking away from the computer. Moreover, it gives you the freedom to do other tasks while on call.
How do You Use a Bluetooth Headset with Skype?
To use your Bluetooth headset with a computer it needs to be paired with your computer. But first check if your Skype is the latest version by signing in to Skype and clicking ‘About Skype’ on the Help menu. Verify also if your Bluetooth device is Skype certified, it may not work with Skype if not. Next then is to install the headset to the computer.
1. Make sure your computer is Bluetooth-enabled. With a Mac a Sony or HP bluetooth may be installed already. Otherwise, a Bluetooth adapter is needed. Install the adapter with the drivers it came with.
2. Pair the headset with the computer. Double click the Bluetooth utility on the control panel; on programs folder if using an adapter. Double click ‘search for devices’ to enable “discovery” mode. Then put the headset into pairing mode – check the manual for this. Once the computer locates the Bluetooth headset a 4-digit passkey may be asked for – again check the manual.
3. Make the headset your Skype Audio device. Sign in to Skype; select Tools -> Options -> Sound Devices. Choose “Bluetooth Audio” for audio in and out.
4. Skype away. To make a test call, call the Skype Testing Service (echo123) first to test if the audio is working properly.
Computer or Mobile – Does a Bluetooth Headset Work with Both?
Bluetooth headsets are designed for wireless phone use primarily. However, as more and more people are using Skype and other VoIP services, the need for such devices for computer use is just as highly demanded as for phones.
Since I have already discussed installation of Bluetooth Headset on a computer, here are the instructions for mobile phone installation of your headset.
1. To locate the Bluetooth settings of your phone, press the “Menu” or “Home” on the phone. Then scroll to find the features “Options”, “Setting”, or “Connectivity”.
2. Activate the Bluetooth by tapping, sliding, or checking the “On” button which is usually located next to “Bluetooth” setting.
3. At that time put your Bluetooth headset into “Pairing Mode”, hold the power button down for 5-10 seconds until the light blinks. Enabling it allows other device to search and connect with the headset.
4. To locate your headset, click “Add Device” on the Bluetooth settings of your phone.
5. Type in the password or connection code – found on the Bluetooth’s manual.
6. Go to your phone’s Skype application and start making a call.
Where is the Best Place to Purchase a Bluetooth Headset?
The online marketplace is the number one place to go when purchasing Bluetooth headsets. If your headset is mainly for making calls with Skype it would be better to shop at their site for their highly recommended headsets. For not all features of the Bluetooth headset may work properly when used with Skype. To make sure, visit their website and check the available headsets with no compatibility issues with the software.
There are other things to consider when buying a Bluetooth Headset. If you are shopping on the internet, go to sites that offer reviews on the device by simply typing Bluetooth Headset Reviews” on the search engine. In these reviews sites, the top sellers are listed with their corresponding prices – a great help if one is on a budget. Additionally, one can learn the details of the products and read their advantages and disadvantages as evaluated by others. With this, your search will be faster and easier.
Bluetooth headsets allow the user to conduct calls hands-free. You can now perform other activities while talking. It is the best solution if you need to do something with your hands but have to stay on the call.
